Clean Sport Updates

Introduction

All athletes have the right to compete knowing that they—and their competitors—are clean.
We are fully committed to protecting the integrity of our sport through partnership with UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) and British Weight Lifting (BWL), Great Britain’s National Governing Body.

UK Anti-Doping Rules

The anti-doping rules of British Weight Lifting are published and maintained by UK Anti-Doping and apply to all BWL members, regardless of participation level.

2021 World Anti-Doping Code

Since 1 January 2021, the updated World Anti-Doping Code has been in force.
Athletes and support personnel may be classified as:

  • International-Level

  • National-Level

  • Recreational Athlete

Full guidance is available on the UKAD website.

Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs)

Breaking anti-doping rules can lead to a ban from all sport.
Athletes and support personnel must understand:

  • What constitutes an ADRV

  • The consequences of violations

  • Current sanctions and suspended individuals

Refer to UKAD resources for full details.

The Big Picture – Clean Sport Essentials

Athletes are strictly responsible for any substance found in their system—regardless of intent.
Understanding risks and responsibilities is essential to avoid unintentional violations.

The Prohibited List

All banned substances and methods are defined in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List, updated annually on 1 January.

Athletes and support personnel should:

  • Review the list every year

  • Stay alert to mid-year updates

  • Check UKAD guidance regularly

Checking Medications

Before taking any medication—prescribed or over-the-counter—athletes must confirm it is permitted.

Use Global DRO to check:

  • Ingredients

  • Brand names

  • Country-specific variations

Additional guidance is available via UKAD.

Nutritional Supplements

UKAD promotes a food-first approach.
No supplement can be guaranteed free from prohibited substances.

Before using supplements:

  1. Assess need, risk, and consequence

  2. Check Informed Sport batch-tested products

  3. Review UKAD supplement guidance

Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs)

Athletes requiring a prohibited substance for legitimate medical treatment must apply for a TUE.

Approval is granted only when:

  • No permitted alternative exists

  • Strict medical criteria are met

Use the UKAD TUE Wizard to determine eligibility and application process.

What Happens During Testing?

Athletes should understand their rights and responsibilities when notified for testing by a Chaperone or Doping Control Officer.

UKAD provides:

  • Step-by-step testing guidance

  • Educational videos

  • Detailed preparation resources
